Cinematic story-telling is a two-way dynamic between the show and the audience. Audiences want someone about whom they will care. The Soprano's "worked" because the audience cared about a mid-level Mafiaoso who shared his inner conflicts with his therapist (and therefore the audience). The goal is not to glorify the white savior but rather to connect with the largest possible audience.
