Abe Lincoln Knew Donald Trump

From a letter written by Abraham Lincoln to Joshua Speed in August, 1855:

“As a nation, we began by declaring that “all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except negroes.” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read “all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.” When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty — to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic].”

Trump, as a representative of a set of beliefs, is an old American story that periodically emerges anew from the ashcan of history when social and economic change discomforts the nation and its most wealthy citizens.

Every generation is required to face new challenges and to reshape the American Dream while holding on to our core ideals. The Trump Party seeks to govern by fear and hold fast against the tidal wave of change. The truth is that we can only go forward — adapting, growing, including, progressing and improving our Union. The course of history gives us no other choice.
